Oh, Hey, Hi, hi. Hope you’re doing well.
I’ve been updating my Portfolio. My normal approach to portfolio pages is to concoct a script, and then draw that, and that system was working until it wasn’t. I attempted to draw a Judge Dredd comic page, and it came out shit. So I decided to try a different tact, find some comic scripts online and draw them. Ya know, like everyone else.
One of the pages was Page 3, from TMNT: Universe issue 1, written by Paul Allor, a comic I haven’t read, but I Love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I’m sure you know that already. The other pages were Xena The Warrior Princess, and Blue Beetle.
So I drew the TMNT page, and it was shit. Well, maybe not shit, but not my best foot forward as it was meant to be.
So I decided to revisits and colour the motherfucker. And in the process of colouring the motherfucker, I saw what I did wrong with the lineart, the lack of line weight, shadows, the little noddles and artifacts the give a piece character. It looked like a rush job, which it wasn’t.
Anyway, onwards and upwards.
The colours came out really well I think, sets the scene better. To me it looks like the brothers are on a roof at dusk in Queens (or what a Brit thinks Queens is)
And the Line art is better too. There character and effort init.
But this is not a night time scene, so I took the shadow layer from the colours, and put it on top of the line art. And I liked the effect. Looks like an old school Eastman and Laird page. I shouldn’t be so hesitant about using greys in my line art.
But what if I put the colour into the bandannas, what then?
And if I started to fuck around and see what happens?
Oh the Jolly Japes.
But what if I turned this page into an ultra saturated, neon 90’s, eye sore good time?
Oh, the fun. What unbridled fun.
And I wanted to share it with you. I’m glad I was able to turn this page around, and come up with something that I can be proud of. And learn valuable life lessons along the way.
And who knows. May lead to some work. Here’s my Portfolio btw, if you want to see the Xena Warrior Princess, Street Fighter and Blue Beetle pages I done did.
Thank you, thank you, you’re the best, you’re the best and what should I draw next?
Love you
